Top 5 of All Time - Movie Motivation

We all need a little motivation now and then and a little pep talk can go a long way. I get my motivation form a few places and one of them is listening to some good old movie quotes and speeches. There's always a little priceless nugget of advice to be found somewhere.

So for this week's Top 5 of All Time I'm going for my favourite motivating and inspiring movie moments. Let's go! (Click the images to get to the videos)

Pursuit of Happiness

5 » The Pursuit of Happiness!
This movie made me cry! Like openly sob. It was just so moving and this part when Chris is talking to his son and realises that he has basically told his son not to follow his dream ugh - Pass the hankies. I just love the look on Will Smith's face when he realises that if he leaves it there he could have, in one swift moment, stopped his son from dreaming for the rest of his life. It's as if his son's life flashed before his eyes and it wasn't a happy one. Beautiful part of the movie.

Batman Begins

4 » Batman Begins
This pretty much sets up the entire trilogy, there is the start of Dark Knight Rises where Bruce has stopped listening, but he gets there in the end. It's a lesson that says it's ok to fail - that's how we learn to succeed. If you fall flat on your face just get up, dust yourself off and keep on trucking - or rambling as the case may be in the Nolanverse.

Ferris Bueller

3 »   Ferris Bueller
I first heard this when I was younger and I kind of got it then, but as I got older and wiser and went through some "stuff" and suffered a great loss it became more meaningful and important to me. Life does move pretty really fast and we do need to remember to stop some times and appreciate what we have, who we have and who we are. Live in the now man!

Little Miss Sunshine
2 »   Little Miss sunshine
One of my favourite's with a sweary word for emphasis! This is one that comes up with me every now and then. When I'm wondering whether I should give up my dreams and take a job just for the money for the rest of my life. Right now I'm kind of working three jobs and barely scraping by. I love each one, but there is always this niggling feeling whether it's time to just let it all go and get the "normal" job. I mean yeah I'd love to work in a studio full time surrounded by other creative folk and I'm giving it everything I've got to try and find that, but they're thin on the ground. I know in my heart that I will eventually get to where I want to be, I just have to keep doing what I love to get there!
*Apologies for the lack of quality one the video on this one, it's the only clip on YouTube I could find*

Rocky Balboa

1 »   Rocky Balboa
I said it before in my 5 Things We Can Learn From Rocky post, life is tough sometimes and we all get knocked down occasionally. The hits can be hard too and totally deflate us in every way, but as Rocky says we have to be willing to take the hits and keep moving. That's how we accomplish our goals no matter how hard things get. Nothing worth doing is easy so fight it out to the end and it'll all be worth it!

So these are my Top 5 Motivational Movie Quotes and I hope you get as much out of them as I do. If you have any that I haven't mentioned then leave a comment below as you can never have too many inspiring snippets of wisdom in your life!

Finds of the Week - Kinkei Love + Giveaway

For my Finds of the Week this week I wanted to share one of my favourite illustrators in the Verse, Kinkei  aka Kei Phillips.

Her work is so beautiful and I've been a fan for many years now. It's fun, colourful and pretty funky and when it came to finding something for Peter and my anniversary it was I wanted a one of Kinkei piece. We ended up with a stunning piece of artwork that is now proudly displayed in our living room - getting that framed was so exciting as it was like our first "us" piece if that makes sense?? It was exciting and I smile everytime I see it.

Here are some examples of some of the stunning work Kinkei does,  enjoy!

Here's the anniversary piece I commissioned from Kinkei, I love it so much - mostly because my hair looks all kinds of awesome!

You can find Kinkei on

Favourite Scottish Words with Jenny

So here we are Jenny and I celebrating our favourite Scottish words. Mine are over on Jenny's blog and Jenny has kindly shared her particularly hilarious selection here. I've been howling with laughter at these as they are all great words and phrases, but I had them on my huge list that I narrowed down for my post. Great minds eh! I'll let you get cracking in on these and I hope you enjoy them as much as we do! Over to Jenny.

***

Awrite Everybody?

As part of my sponsor swap with Claire, we decided we should give you some insight into our national language. There aren't many Scottish bloggers that I've met, so it was fun to get the chance to do this. I hope you can find a way to use THESE words in everyday life - I know I do.

Bampot;
It's a brilliant word to describe a flippin' idiot. Doesn't it just sound extra insulting?

Blutered
Falling down drunk or wasted. For an accurate visual- watch this; it's a cracker

This one's certainly a cracker. It's what we call a cast for broken bones. I find that I have to stop myself using this word here in Barbados because they look at me like I'm speaking Double Dutch or something

Keech
The CH in keech would be pronounced  from the throat like Loch. It means poop. I.e. I've gone and got dog keech stuck to the sole of my shoe!

Wheesht essentially means shut up. For example 'wheesht a minute - can't you see I'm on the phone?'

Wain
A name commonly used to refer to children, for example your grandmother might tell your mom that it's been ages since she's seen 'the wain' meaning you. If you're a female you'll also hear the word 'Hen' a LOT. Especially from nice wee old ladies, they use it as a pet name;'Thanks Hen!'

Gubbed
If you or your other half support Arsenal, you should be familiar with this word. It means to get badly beaten. For example; the 'Gers got a complete gubbing today, it was 4-0 to Celtic.
[Rangers and Celtic are 2 of Scotland's most well known teams, whose fans often have deep hatred for each other]

Snappy, grumpy and a general party pooper. ^ This guy is a crabbit geezer!

Well that's all my favorite words..
Now Here's Some Bonus Phrases!

Get It Right Up Ye! - Can be used when someone pisses you off.

Nae Bother Pal! Means no worries friend, use it instead of you're welcome

Away and Run Up My Humph! - Get Lost!

Well how'd you enjoy our patter? I love our unique dialects and words, don't you? If you know any awesome dialectal words (from yours or ours) leave them in the comments box below.

If you want to check out Claire's version, pop on over to my blog!

For a good laugh you can check out Billy Connolly, Still Game + Rab C Nesbitt
( not for those who don't like cursing though)

Things You Should Know

I've been seeing this post pop up all over the place and I'll be lying if I said I wasn't hoping someone would tag me in order to fulfil my nerdy need to fill in forms and Q&As! Needless to say that I was chuffed to bits when Erika and Laura both tagged me - woots!! Thank you ladies x
So here are my six things you should know.

If you could see any artist/band live which would you choose?
Music has always been pretty important to me and I have a pretty diverse taste. When I was younger I always loved The Eagles and Bon Jovi. As I grew up in to a rocking teenager I got in to the Foo Fighters. When I hit my twenties I fell in love with DeVotchKa.

These were four bands I wanted to see and over the years I've seen them all at least twice. Of all of the gigs I've been to the first DeVotvhKa gig was the best. It was in a small venue and was so intimate - the perfect atmosphere for their style of music.

I'm also a big Lifehouse fan and they are a band that connects me with Peter as we kind of bonded over them when we first started seeing each other. We always said that if they ever came back to Glasgow we'd go. This was starting to look unlikely when I was randomly reading a paper I never read and saw an ad for the following night. We got tickets and finally got to see them live and have a dance to our song! Awwww.

Which blog are you in love with that you only found out about recently?
My newest bloggy love is Melanie Fontaine. I think Melanie's blog is fantastic. It's full of beautiful photography and travel posts, including a great series on my native Scotland.
Melanie's also recently blogged about Norway and Jeez-oh the pictures were stunning! I love her enthusiasm for travel, it's infectious and will ignite the wanderlust in anyone!

What hobbies do you have that we don't know about?
For a long time I've dreamed of driving a car very fast around a track, preferably a 1960s Mustang - a 1968 GT390 to be exact! One day I'll do it, until then however I'll keep enjoying the odd trip to the Go Karting.
I love it! There's nothing quite like driving fast around a track and although you only go about 40mph, your ass is pretty much on the ground so it feel a lot faster!

If money wasn't a problem.. what would be your dream destination?
My dream destination right now is to go to Disney World Florida with Peter. I've been before and loved it, but having Peter there would be a whole other level of brilliance. Like me, he's a big kid at heart and we'd have so much fun and so many laughs. We're currently saving our pennies and will hopefully get there in the next five years, but we WILL get there!

*I know this is Paris, but I love the colour in the image *

If you could meet any blogger in person, who would you pick?
I'd love to have an international meet up with some of the amazing folk I've met, but I'd have to pick Crystal from The Happy Type. Crystal has been an amazing source of support, encouragement and inspiration. She has made my blogging (and fitness) journey so enjoyable. One of these days I will get to thank her in person and also go on a thrifting mission for vintage t shirts!

What's something we may not know about you?
So a few years ago I used to be a dressmaker's assistant and tutor. Yeah, me the unfashionable one! I wanted to learn how to sew so I booked myself on to a ten week course. After my first block I booked another more advanced one with the same teacher, but just after I started it I was asked if I wanted to become an assistant - yes was my answer!

During my time in the studio I helped to make suits, jackets, skirts, accessories and even wedding dresses. I also ended up teaching the class one night a week. It was a great experience and a whole load of fun. It also shows just how much life can take you down a path you never expected!

***

Well that was fun and thanks again to Laura and Erika for tagging me. Now it's my turn to tag folk:

Aukele @ 91 Dash

Weekly Wishes #10

Another Monday has arrived and it's time for another Weekly Wishes, but first a catch up from last week

My to do list has most things checked off, but as far as time management goes I still struggled and didn't get snooping in to the Pomodoro method all that much. So that will continue for this week. As for my fitness challenges, well I struggled with them too. For some reason last week was full of walls to bust down. I did change it up a bit though and didn't strictly stick to the Beginners Calendar. As my goal is more about my fitness level at the moment I stuck to cardio and all over body workouts rather than specific focused ones. I'm now beginning to see just how great Blogilates is as I can pick and choose what videos to include depending on my overall goal. Once this calendar is done, I'll be creating my own which is something I seem to be geeking out about right now!

This week I'm hoping to be a bit more active in the blogging world as I've felt it slip over the past two weeks. I'll be making a bigger effort to engage and comment on other blogs and start growing my blogging circle. So I'm on a mission of discovery to find new bloggy friends! I'll share some links next week of some of my new finds.

I also really want to smash my favourite Scottish words post for Jenny, we're doing a special guest post swap and I seriously can't wait to share it with you guys. I've been working on it today and have been reading a load of words that have just made me laugh so much, so I'm in a cracking mood today!!

What's your new favourite blog? I'd love to check some of them out if you point me in the right direction! If you haven't linked up with Weekly Wishes yet, then you should. We're growing in numbers by the week and it's fantastic! Check it out over at The Nectar Collective.

Until next week Weekly Wishers - Good luck with your goals!

Five Things We Can Learn From Rocky

If you’ve read any of my Random Fact posts it’s fairly obvious that I’m a bit of a movie nerd. Well one of my all time favourite movies is Rocky. To some that will make total sense, to others not so much.

When I was younger I loved Rocky because it was about boxing, but as I got older and time went on I began to realise it was about a lot more than that. I began to understand what it was really about – following your gut, your heart and your dreams, to achieve things even you weren’t sure you could do. To keep going no matter how tough things get and if life knocks you down to get back up!

The movie is full of inspiration and motivation, but so is the story of how Stallone made it happen. He went broke, people laughed at him and he even had to sell his dog!  But he stuck to his dream, worked hard, struggled and eventually it worked out!

So what can we learn from the story of Rocky, both on and off screen? Here’s a list of my five lessons.

Keep moving forward
Don’t let negative past experiences ruin today. This is a bad habit of mine, but is something I’m working on now with my fitness challenge. I told myself that I’d never be able to reach my fitness goals because I’ve never stuck to a regime before, so why is now any different. With a little support, encouragement and positive outlook I’m finally doing it.  I’m 18 days in and although I may miss the odd one, I’m trying not to let it bother me. I suck it up and focus on the next day’s routine.
So if you want to try something new or something you feel you’ve failed at before move forward, let past negatives go and focus on now! If you have a blip, let it go and start fresh.

Sylvester Stallone felt rejection so many times in his journey to get Rocky made. He stuck to his guns though, got the part, got it produced and even won an Oscar! He didn’t let all the negativity that was thrown his way bring him down:
“I take rejection as someone blowing a bugle in my ear to wake me up and get going, rather than retreat.”

There ain’t no can’ts!
Or as my Grandma says “can’t means won’t”. Saying you can’t do something is pretty much a sure fire way to fail before you’ve even started. Everyone’s guilty of this at some point in their lives. I’ve had a lot of folk say to me “I can’t draw” and to them I should really ask, have you tried? Most folk will probably say something like “yeah, once and I was rubbish” compared to who? Someone who has being at it for years? All you need is practice and determination. Both in time will build your confidence in your skills and yourself. Find yourself an art class or a book on drawing or whatever it is you want to do. Research, the right information, tutorials and hard work will serve you well and soon you’ll realise you can do it!

In order to beat Apollo, Rocky has to learn to fight right handed, something he says he “can’t” do. With hard work, determination,  Mickey screaming at him (encouragingly of course) and a training montage he gets the job done and wins the fight.

Believe in yourself
Believing in yourself can sometimes be difficult, especially if doing the opposite is a lifetime habit. It was a terrible habit of mine, doubting my skills and I’ve only recently truly started to think more positively about them.

One way to start believing in yourself and thinking more positively is to write a list of all your achievements. It doesn’t matter how small they are, as long as you felt good about it. When I did my 30ish before 30 list it brought back great memories and things I’d completely forgotten about. It helped me realise that I’ve done some pretty cool things already in my life and there is no reason why I can’t achieve more.

Stallone believed in himself and the story of Rocky so much that he turned down so many offers for the script, offers that would have made him a lot of money. He wanted to play Rocky so refused any offer that didn’t include him – that’s awesome self belief right there!

Life ain’t all sunshine and rainbows
Let’s be honest, sometimes life can suck and things can get tough – you just have to keep on punching! If you’ve hit rock bottom, take heart that the only direction left is up. Take steps to live more positively, choose how you react to things. I’ve heard folk say that gratitude journals help them develop a more positive outlook and although I’ve never tried this myself I can understand the merit in it. I tried making a positive list – each night write down one positive thing that happened or you felt through the day, then on the following Monday you’ll have a list of seven things that made you happy. This made the start of my week pretty sweet and overtime you start to look for the positives in everything and your whole outlook eventually changes, worth a shot right?

Every movie in the franchise delivers life blows to Rocky and each time he overcomes them to win or see things through to the end - “It ain’t about how hard you hit, it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward”

Go the distance
If you want to accomplish your goals or do something new – go for it! Immerse yourself in it, take a class, join a club, do some tutorials, or take part in a hangout online. Whether it’s saving up for a once in a lifetime trip, to learn Photoshop or play an instrument. Just do what it takes to make your dreams come true, but also be aware that it’s ok for those goals to change and evolve. Don’t do things half assed, do them to the full and be enthusiastic. If you start to get bogged down and start to worry you’re not getting there fast enough, take a moment, breathe and remember why you wanted to do it in the first place. See it through to the end and you’ll never have to say that you didn’t try and you won’t regret a thing!

“Cause all I wanna do is go the distance. Nobody's ever gone the distance with Creed, and if I can go that distance, you see, and that bell rings and I'm still standin', I'm gonna know for the first time in my life, see, that I weren't just another bum from the neighbourhood.”

***

So there you go, that's why Rocky inspires me. Now do you have any movies or quotes that inspire you to keep going, to try something new, or believe in yourself? Then share them in the comments because we all need a little motivation at times!

My First Sponsor ~ Diary of a Dreamer

Today marks the start of something pretty exciting for Daisy Bisley - I have my very first sponsor joining my sidebar today. Yuppers, I'm tenderly dipping my toe in to the ocean of sponsorship, so please join me in welcoming the lovely Jenny from Diary of a Dreamer.
Jenny got in a touch a wee while ago asking if I'd be interested in doing a sponsor swap and as a reader and fan of her blog I couldn't say no! I'm hoping that this is the start of something really great for the blog and can't wait to get stuck in to the sponsorship journey.
So without further ado say a massive hello to Jenny!

Diary of a Dreamer

What motivated you to start writing?
Well I used to watch a lot of youtube videos and so many people on youtube link up their blogs. I clicked on some and decided that I really wanted to make one of my own. At the time I was a little bit obsessed by the whole natural hair & mixed raced hair videos, and therefore decided to name the blog thecutestcurliest. Man is it embarrassing to have your domain be that lol.

What do you love most about blogging?
I love blogging on the whole, but I'd have to say the sense of community that you get. Tons of us live in totally different states, countries and time zones, but yet we're always there for one another to give each other support, advice and sweet comments. Can't count the number of amazing blog-friends I've made since I started 3 short months ago!

Describe yourself in 5 words
Passionate, Exotic, Geeky, Unique, Girly

What is your biggest geeky love?
Hmm, I don't know.. I actually have so many geeky things I love doing. I have a love of all things paper. Anything book related will totally cause a nerdgasm, from amazing literature to school supplies/stationary.

Where would you like your blog to go or to achieve?
In recent times, a ton of people have started to blog in order to make money, and while I'd love to eventually make a little pocket change from this oh so time consuming hobby, I'd more so love for my blog to become a place of inspiration. My brain is a hodge podge of a bunch of stuff and so categorizing it would be hard to do. I want it to be a place where you can find something to laugh at when you're down, to find a brill work out to really get you pumped, to find words that speak to you no matter what you're looking for. Numbers aren't important, ( I want to share my efforts to live positively and encourage others in essence.)

I also asked Jenny to pick three of her favourites posts so make sure you check these out!

*Click here if you want to know more about me*
*Click here to read my truest post ever *
*You'll definitely thank me later if you read this one*

Weekly Wishes #9

Weekly Wishes 9
It's Monday again (so quick?) which means it's time to catch up on and make new Weekly Wishes.

Last week I wanted to check off everything on my to do list. How did I do? I did ok, I got most things checked off with a few still to do, but I'll add them on to this week's list. As for my Blogilates and Arm challenge I'm still doing pretty well. I've hit a wall a couple of times, but kept going and battled on. I'm not going to lie, I'm really proud of myself with this. I have never keep fitness promises going for longer than two or three days in a row, but right now I'm on day 9 of my Blogilates Beginners Calendar and day fifteen of my arm challenge!! DAY 15!!! I couldn't be doing it with all the support of the ladies at #bloggersgettingfit and of course Peter who has been amazingly supportive of me, cheering me on like a drill sergeant lol!

So this week's goals are fairly similar to last week - check off the to do list and to keep my fitness challenges going. The only thing is I need to manage my time in order to fit everything in. I have three design commissions to get started on as well as a Top Secret design project on the go. Then there are a few bloggy related things going on that I want to get up and running this month. It's all go here for me and I really need to focus in order to keep everything in check while at the same time trying not to juggle too many balls.

How do you lovely folks keep on top of your busy schedules? Any advice would be really appreciated! Although I feel like things are starting to pile up I also have a sneaky suspicion that things may finally be happening for the good in my design work, could it be true? I certainly hope so.

Have you joined in with Weekly Wishes at The Nectar Collective yet? Join us and share your goals and challenges with us and get some comment love!

Snail Mail Collective

I was sitting at my desk wanting to a write a flying by the seat of my pants type post when there was droppage from the letterbox. Huzzah! My Snail Mail Collective parcel had made its way across the Atlantic (or Pacific if the postie was taking the long way round) and arrived safely! These are my goodies from Seattle

Snail Mail Collective

I was paired with Ashley who along with her husband Brian write the beautiful blog A and B C the World. If you love travel and stunning photography then I suggest you go and have a nosey around the blog. Ashley and Brian have filled their space on the web full of beautiful images that certainly bring out the wanderlust in me. Their recent trip to Long Beach had me seriously craving a sunny beach and a break from our not so sunny weather here in Scotland.

It was brilliant getting to know Ashley and having a shiny new pen pal! I can't wait to see more of her amazing posts, images and video shares - A and B C the World is now my go to place on the net for a cyber-vacation, if there is such a thing lol!

Tattoo Thursday ~ Geek Week Special

I haven't done one of these since I started bloggin again, so it's about time I did. I spend a lot of my time looking at tattoos for inspiration so as you can image I have quite the Pinterest board full of them. Today I thought I'd share some of my favourite tattoo finds from Pinterest and seeing as we're all embracing our inner geeks this week we're having a geek theme.

Nerd tattoos are a favourite of mine as I love to see how folk choose to express their loves and geeky obsessions with ink - I can't get enough of them! I have two myself one from The Crow and another Tolkien one of the Evenstar, there are plans to get a Bat Tatt on my wrist eventually, just need to save the pennies. Enjoy!

If you have a geeky tattoos or in fact any tattoo, feel free to share your pics and inky experiences in the comments!

Embrace Your Inner Geek During Geek Week

Geek Week It's Geek Week over on YouTube and I've been feeling pretty inspired to get my nerd on and write something.

Being a geek or a nerd to me is the same thing. I don't know where to draw the line and frankly I don't care! If you're a geek or a nerd chances are you're slightly obsessed with something and love it with your whole heart, so really we're all the same.

You can be a nerd about anything, movies, music, science, comics, or more specific things like Lord of the Rings, Firefly, Mass Effect! Anything goes and that's the fun of it.

In recent years the embracing of nerd/geek culture has been amazing, we've all been able to shout that little bit louder about the things we love and not be ridiculed for it. It's something we can all get involved in and have fun with. Even those who claim not to be nerds or those that used to mock us - are you trying to tell me there's nothing you love or obsess over? TV shows, books, cars, computers, design? Come one, there's got to be something you're crazy about!
I've had my share of TV based obsessions over the years, Firefly, Quantum Leap, Star Trek, Supernatural, David Duchovny I mean The X Files. There has also been musical loves, movie obsessions, a whole load of Middle Earth based geekery and not to mention the Bat that brought Peter and I together when we were first getting to know each other. Each one has in some way influenced the other and my life in a positive way.

So with this wealth of love and appreciation so readily available to us, why are some folk reluctant or afraid to embrace that inner geek and show off their fandom with pride? Some casting off their childhood loves to be more mature and possibly growing up a little too much?

"The most sophisticated people I know - inside they are all children."
Jim Henson

I've had eyes rolled at me, the odd "grow up" comment, the "really? You like Batman" and "girls aren't supposed to like action movies" conversations. It used to bother me quite a bit, but now I know I'm not the only one! There's tons of us ladies out there who love a bit of destruction porn and Statham movies. I love geeky and nerdy things and would happily sit for hours discussing the deepest meanings of The Matrix, the tormented dark version of Batman I'd love to see on the big screen or how I think Star Trek is better than Star Wars! And now I'm calling on you to embrace your inner geek and shout about your nerdy obsessions from the rooftops. Here's four reasons why:

1 »  Truly loving something, be it a comic character, Sci Fi, TV show, book or a piece of music, makes us feel good. So go find your fandom,
the thing you love and geek out over it!

2 »  You're soooo not alone! Guaranteed if you love something there's hundreds if not thousands of folk who love it too. That's loads of potential nerd buddies! Go connect. Join a forum, go to a con get involved and spread the love!

3 » Inspiration is there in abundance! Things we love and enjoy inspire us, to keep going through difficult times, to get out of a creative rut or to try something completely new. Watch, listen, read, do and be inspired.

4 » This video. When asked by a fan to tell her daughter why it's awesome to be a nerd, Wil Wheaton had this to say ↓↓↓

I also loved this little quote from the comments under the video:

"Hipsters are all about loving a thing and when they meet someone else who loves it, then they'll move onto something else.
Nerds are all about loving a thing and when they meet someone else who loves it, then they'll jump with joy at finding someone to share that thing with."

Share your joy folks!
